When Growth Is Working, What Should You Scale Next?

How to Make Better Sales and Marketing Growth Decisions

Your business is performing well, customers are responding and new opportunities are emerging, perhaps in a market you’ve been considering, a proposition gaining traction or relationships with room to develop.

All three could contribute to your next stage of growth, but pursuing them simultaneously may dilute the attention each deserves.

So how do you decide which opportunity to back?

The answer isn’t always found in the most encouraging forecast or persuasive business case. Sometimes, it’s in what you can establish before committing to the next stage.

What distinguishes businesses that grow consistently?

McKinsey’s 2026 Global B2B Pulse, involving nearly 4,000 decision-makers across 13 countries, found that 60% of businesses identified as market leaders reported double-digit revenue growth, compared with 21% of those losing market share.

The research associated stronger performance with three capabilities: personalised customer engagement, AI embedded in commercial workflows and clear accountability for sales activity.

The distinction is important because no single capability delivers the whole result.

Customer intelligence helps identify demand, technology can reveal patterns and experienced people turn those insights into decisions and action.

For CEOs and CROs, the opportunity is to understand which combination will make the greatest difference to the business.

The opportunity behind a successful proposition

Consider a business whose latest proposition is attracting strong interest from existing customers.

There’s enthusiasm for introducing it to another market, and good reason to be optimistic, but the conditions that made it successful may not be the same elsewhere.

Was demand driven by a particular customer challenge, an established relationship or the way the proposition was presented?

Each explanation points towards a different expansion strategy.

Testing those assumptions with a carefully selected audience could reveal whether the opportunity is as promising as it appears, or whether a different approach would produce a stronger result.

Put the idea to the test

Imagine taking that proposition into a new market on a smaller scale.

Sales shares what it knows about customer priorities, marketing tests the proposition with a defined audience and data establishes a starting point against which progress can be assessed.

AI can support the research and analysis, helping the team compare customer responses and recognise patterns that deserve closer attention.

The findings might support expansion, identify a more receptive segment or challenge the original assumption.

None of those outcomes makes the exercise wasted effort, because the business gains evidence it can use to make its next decision.

Five questions worth asking before you scale

  • ●Objective. What commercial outcome are we trying to achieve?
  • ●Hypothesis. What do we believe will make this opportunity successful?
  • ●Test. How can we investigate that assumption on a manageable scale?
  • ●Measure. What evidence would justify expanding the approach?
  • ●Innovate. What should we refine, repeat or reconsider?

These questions create a useful distinction between an idea that sounds promising and one with evidence behind it.

What changes when evidence guides growth?

Instead of treating every new initiative as a separate decision, the business builds on what previous activity has revealed about its customers, propositions and markets.

A successful test provides a stronger basis for expansion, while an unexpected result can expose a more attractive opportunity or prevent an assumption from shaping a larger commitment.

This doesn’t remove commercial judgement, experience or ambition. It gives leadership better information to apply them.
